Valtrex Mechanism of Action

Valtrex is an antiviral drug whose active ingredient is valacyclovir hydrochloride. In short, Valtrex works by stopping the herpes viruses, such as herpes simplex 1 and 2, as well as varicella zoster, from affecting more cells, that way keeping the situation under control. Inside the body, this active ingredient is converted into L-valine and acyclovir. Acyclovir is a more active form of this antiviral drug.

The herpes viruses require DNA polymerase for their genetic material to be copied from RNA to DNA in human body. When Valtrex blocks the action of DNA polymerase, the viruses are unable to multiply. This is the time when your immune system steps in, because now it's easier to get the symptoms under control and avoid outbreaks in future.

It's important to point out, however, that Valtrex is not a cure for herpes infections, as its mechanism of action only allows stopping further spread of the virus. For instance, patients taking Valtrex for genital herpes still remain as contagious when taking the medicine and need to wear a condom or have their partner wear one to avoid passing the infection.
